There are hundreds of thousands of lawyers in the United States, trying to enforce the law and protect our way of life. But, what actually are laws? Why do we need to follow them? And why are they important? Do you want to learn how the law works? Read on to find out.
What Is the Definition of Law?
A law is essentially defined as a custom or code of conduct that’s followed by a community in order to regulate our ways of living. Laws are enforced by government bodies, such as courts.
Laws are, of course, different than a constitution, or the United States Constitution. A constitution is basically a founding set of principles that can be changed or interpreted in different ways. A constitution is usually written when a country is formed or separates from a different country.
The United States Constitution is interpreted by different legal scholars in various ways in order to get an idea of what laws should be followed and instituted.
Types of Laws
There are lots of different laws out there that work in different ways and govern different aspects of our lives. Generally, laws can be divided into administrative law, criminal law, statutory law, treaties, common law, and Constitutional law.
Constitutional law is a law as it relates to the United States constitution. Common law is a law that is derived from British law, from before the United States had a revolution to separate themselves from the British. Treaties are made between foreign governments, Native American governments, or non-governmental organizations to regulate various aspects of the world that affect many different people.
Criminal law is a law that governs wrongful acts conducted by a person or an organization. Administrative law is a law that sets up how our government and related bodies work and how they are administered.
Law is also governed on different levels. There is international law, federal law, state law, and local law. These levels dictate how these laws are enforced or enacted, and how punishments can be enforced against people or bodies who violate laws.
These laws can also differ based on where you are. For example, marijuana consumption is legal in some states, but not in others. And, the possible punishments for marijuana consumption can also differ significantly on a state-by-state basis. That’s why it’s always important to be educated about what laws are enforced in your particular location.
