Becoming A Citizen
The process of obtaining “Malta Citizenship by Naturalisation for Exceptional Services by Direct Investment” is broken up in four stages. Commonly referred to as the “Maltese Exceptional Investor Naturalisation” (MEIN) procedures, you are able to receive Maltese citizenship on the basis of a contribution to and investment in Malta.
There are 3 mandatory investments that must be executed by the applicant in order to be eligible for the Malta Citizenship by Investment Program:
- Government Contribution – An exceptional direct investment of a minimum of €600,000 or €750,000 for the primary applicant, depending on the residency duration chosen (12 or 36 months) (an additional €50,000 is required for each dependent).
- Property Investment – A residential property lease for at least €16,000 per year for a term of five years, or the purchase of a property for at least €700,000 that must be retained for at least five years.
- Philanthropic Donation – A €10,000 donation to a CMA-approved registered sport, cultural, scientific, philanthropic, animal welfare, or artistic non-governmental organization or society.
The qualifying investment must be kept for a minimum of five years, and the applicant must demonstrate strong ties to the island.
The Application Process
Applicants for a citizenship in Malta must be over the age of 18, have a clean criminal record and pass a stringent due diligence process and fulfill all the necessary investment requirements. They also cannot be from one of the ‘banned’ countries list.
The timeline for the process is as follows:
- Purchase qualifying real estate in Malta and register for residency.
- Apply for Malta Citizenship By Investment after 12-36 Months, pay the due diligence fees, submit paperwork and pass a criminal background check.
- The Maltese government will officially confirm whether the application has been successful after 120-150 days and provide a conditional acceptance.
- The investor and dependents will receive a naturalization certificate upon completing all requirements, and be given a Maltese passport.
